The last time that father faced son, the grandson was less than one year old. It was 18 years ago, when Gordie Gillespie led his St. Francis Saints to a split with his son Bob's Ripon Red Hawks at Francis Field in Joliet, Ill. The most recent meeting was a little different.
"We definitely want to go down there and win games. It will be a great atmosphere to play in," says first year Scott Gillespie. "We do have two Gillespie's on our side so we should be ok." Having lost three of their last four meetings versus Gordie's St.
The Red Hawks started the outdoor track season with a bang this past Saturday. The men's team won the event held at Ingalls Field and the women's team came in third. The men's team scored almost twice what second-place finisher Michigan Tech scored with a final score of 248 points.
Spring break didn't start quite the way that the baseball team had hoped. Due to weather problems and travel issues, Ripon only had 12 players for their first game against Rensselar Polytechnical Institute and the Hawks lost 10-0. "We only had 12 guys and we were playing with like three hours of sleep," explains junior Mike Lloyd.
