Parallax will debut soon as double edition
Craig Sauer Editor-in-Chief
It has been a long wait, but the Parallax will soon be out, after a year's absence.
Parallax, the student literary magazine which features student works of poetry, prose, photography and other art, will be released as a double edition combining submissions that were never printed from last year and a fresh crop this year.
"This is without a doubt the best sampling of artistic work on the campus," says Parallax Editor Katie Giles, junior. "The content is really good."
Giles says she was really impressed by the quality of the poetry submissions, but also says there's a good mix of different types of work from photography to drawings.
Although the Parallax contains various works from a number of artists with no proscribed commonality, themes do seem to emerge from reading the works.
"There are a lot of comments on society and humanity," Giles says. "What it means to be human, what it means to be young and what it means to be becoming."
Giles points to the winner of the 2004 poetry contest as an excellent example of social commentary. Shannon Hobbs' "Weapons of Minute Destruction" utilizes biting sarcasm and satire to question the increasing paranoia in culture -- specifically with airport security.
Many of the poems and prose, Giles says, chew on large issues.
"The concepts that students explored with their works were large and broad," she says. "They are concepts that go across boundaries."
As other highlights of the book, Giles points at the work of sophomore Josh English with poems like "The Seasons of Dusk" and "Parting and All That."
The 100-plus page literary magazine that showcases the work of over 30 students' work will be ready for pick up mid to late April.
And Giles says to stay tuned for the publication party, which will celebrate the edition's release and the works that were published. Artists will be asked to read and talk about their works. Food and drinks will also be provided for the social event according to Giles.
"It's a really good feeling that it is finished and I am proud to be a part of such a good production," she says.
