During the past two weeks, Senate has seen four one-funds, initially approved three new student organization constitutions and voted in favor of raising the student activities fee by $35.
At the meeting two weeks ago, Senate approved a $500 one-fund brought forth by junior Joe Truesdale on behalf of WRPN to bring the band I Voted for Kodos to campus as part of WRPN's annual Brain Bowl competition. The money covers the flat cost of booking the band to play. The funding was approved with a 19 to three vote, with one abstention.
During the same meeting, sophomore Kendall Guimond, on behalf of SMAC requested a $1,000 one fund to bring a band to campus as part of Homecoming Weekend festivities. The one-fund was approved 20 to one with one abstention.
Also approved was a one-fund brought forth by senior Rob Waddelow of the College Greens. The request, in the amount of $400 was raised in order to cover the cost of renting two college vehicles and gas to attend an anti-war demonstration in Washington, D.C.
Following extensive discussion over whether to fund an overtly political function, the Senate spent considerable time considering the actual money amount. Following research into the costs associated with renting college vehicles, which charge by the mile, the Senate determined $400 to be too small of a figure, and eventually calculated a sum of $720, which was approved in a vote of 20 to one, with one abstention.
The final one-fund was requested during last week's Senate meeting in the amount of $50. The request was made by senior Erik Carlson on behalf of the Ripon Outdoor Club. The funds, which passed unanimously, will be used to cover the rental fees for two of the college vans to travel to to the Kettle Moraine State Forest for a hike.
Also at last week's meeting was the first vote in approval of the constitutions for the Pre-Law Society of Ripon, Chefs Anonymous and Habitat for Humanity.
A second vote for each organization is required before they can become officially recognized by the Senate and receive funding. The second round of voting on the potential clubs will occur at tonight's meeting.
