In the past three weeks Student Senate was presented with various one-fund requests, including several for large sums.
At the Oct. 12 meeting, senators voted on a total of six one-fund requests. Senators unanimously passed one-fund requests totally $7,244.97 for College Democrats, Chefs Anonymous Crimson, Cinemaniacs and College Days, while denying a $290.25 request by the Ripon College Choraliers.
Senators approved $559.97 for Crimson to purchase a new digital camera and scanner. Cinemaniacs will use the approved $375 to host a spring film festival. The College Days request for $210 will be used for repairs to a digital camera. Monies approved for Chefs Anonymous totalled $100, and will be used to fund the first month's food costs for the new organization. Finally, the largest approval was to the College Democrats, which received $6,000 to bring Operation Truth, a panel of speakers that discusses the war in Iraq to campus sometime in February.
At the same session, the request made by the Ripon College Choraliers to purchase polo shirts failed in a three to 16 vote, with one abstention.
Following fall break, senators returned Oct. 26 and rejected a one-fund request from Ripon Right to Life. The proposal requested $2,000 to bring Sally Winn, a speaker from the grassroots pro-life organization Feminists for Life, to campus.
At last Wednesday's session, senators voted to give final approval to constitutional changes for Ripon Right to Life. The Senate also debated a $3,075 one-fund request from the Network, which was presented by juniors Liz Leach and Peter Jensen. Senators approved the request unanimously. The funds will be used to bring speaker Dr. John Corvino to campus Dec. 1 as part of AIDS Awareness Week. Corvino will present a program regarding morality and homosexuality.
As of Wednesday, Nov. 2, Treasurer sophomore Matt Bush reported the one-fund to total $41,108.93. This figure does not take into account the approved Network withdrawl.
Senate meetings are Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Senate Chambers located on second floor Bartlett Hall.
