Music and holiday enthusiasts alike have the opportunity to attend an upcoming performance of the world-renowned Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO).
The group, in their 33rd visit to Ripon College, will stray from their traditional lineup of classical music with a seasonal holiday pops theme. Their songs will include familiar holiday favorites such as "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "O Holy Night," among others.
"We encourage students to attend this event," says Lisa Diedrich, director of conference and contract services. "It's a good study break."
Many students are in fact planning to attend.
"I don't think students should pass up an opportunity like this," says junior Ben Ruetten, who has seen the symphony perform before. "It's very important when you get a chance to see a group of this caliber you take advantage of it. It's a real treat to hear them perform."
The MSO was founded in 1959. It's now under the leadership of its fifth musical director, Andreas Delfs, who is in his ninth year as conductor. His leadership represents a new beginning and the revitalized group has been performing to sold out audiences.
The organization boasts itself as the "largest cultural organization in Wisconsin." In addition to performances around the state, they've also played in Japan, Europe and Cuba and the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City. They also perform for nationally-syndicated radio broadcasts and participate in community art education programs.
The ear-pleasing holiday cheer is free for students and faculty. The Orchestra will perform Sunday, Dec. 11 at 3:15 p.m. in the Storzer gymnasium. For reservations contact Jean Hooker at extension 791.
