Senate grants first approval of pep band constitution

The Student Senate meeting was quite short this last week, as no old business was brought up, and the only new business was a quickly and unanimously approved constitution.
The constitution was for a new student organization, the recently-formed Ripon College Pep Band. Its constitution must pass Senate one more time before it goes into effect. Although it only has an operating budget of $100 for this year, the group intends to play at four home basketball games next semester and has already played at one football game.
Although there have been informal pep bands before, none have been organized in the recent past. Also mentioned was the possibility of a one-fund for more equipment later in the year.
A representative from Habitat for Humanity and Helping Hands made a short presentation to Senate on behalf of both organizations as part of "What's Up With Your Group?," a constitutionally-mandated mechanism for oversight that allows Student Senate to monitor the actions of student organizations.
In open forum, Student Senate Vice-President junior Liz Leach asked senators for their input and opinions on a recent College Days editorial, which was critical of the Council of Student Organizations which she is head. According to President junior Chris Reed-Waddell, Leach was selected by the Student Senate Executive Board to write a response to the editorial in that role. Her letter is printed on page five of this College Days issue.
A new committee, which Leach is also head of, the committee for Student Senate Computer Leasing, was formed before the college broke for Thanksgiving recess. The committee presented their results to Senate at the Nov. 30 Senate session. The committee will hopefully address the computer needs of student organizations. A survey of computer needs from this committee is now circulating among organization leaders and is due back to Senate by Dec. 16 at 5 p.m.
The next Student Senate meeting is open to all students, faculty and staff. It will be held on the third floor of Bartlett Hall in the Student Senate Chambers tonight, Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 6:30 p.m.
