ESPN Wisconsin's Jason Wilde and NBC15.com have reported that a body pulled from the Fox River this afternoon has been identified as Ripon College student Michael T. Philbin.
Philbin was reported missing at 8:15 p.m. Sunday and was last heard from around 2 a.m. Sunday in Oshkosh where he was visiting friends.
Philbin was pulled by divers from the river at approximately 3 p.m., concluding a search for a previously unknown person who had been searched for since a security guard heard calls of distress, saw a man in the river, and phoned police at approximately 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
The junior at Ripon College was a past Dean's List honoree and, as evidenced by the slew of Facebook statuses posted by fellow Ripon students, a beloved friend and peer.
In a press conference at approximately 5:40 p.m., Oshkosh police did not confirm reports that the body is Philbin's and have said that they will issue no further statements until tomorrow at the earliest, but that has not stopped other sources from announcing the news.
Wilde reported very soon after the body was found that it had been ID'd as Philbin, who was the son of Green Bay Packers' Offensive Coordinator Joe Philbin, and NBC15.com later also reported that the body had been identified as the 21-year-old Philbin.
The passing of Philbin marks the second death of a student attending Ripon College in eight months. Class of 2012 student Abigail C. Hultquist was killed in a one-vehicle accident last May.
