The Red Hawks started the outdoor track season with a bang this past Saturday. The men's team won the event held at Ingalls Field and the women's team came in third. The men's team scored almost twice what second-place finisher Michigan Tech scored with a final score of 248 points. Sophomore Bakary Dao won the 100-meter dash, while first year sprinter Jamie Reese won the 400-meter event.
Dao and Reese were also members of the winning 4x100 relay team, joining sophomore Abdoul Madjid and first year sprinter Andrew Handeland. Madjid also got second place in the long jump event.
Senior Jim Hein turned in a win in the 800-meter event, while first year runner Ben Worcester won the 10,000-meter race.
Junior Bob Wood won the 110-meter hurdles while sophomore Andrew Peck won the steeplechase event. First year jumper Max Bellmore won the triple jump and first year thrower Kyle Roy won the discus event.
First year jumper Alex Tomsheck came in second place in the triple jump while first year runner Jason Smith came in second in the 5,000-meter race.
For the women's team it was senior Jenni Marcell who led the way. Marcell won the shot put, discus, hammer, and javelin events while sophomore Amy Krueger won the triple jump.
Junior Erin Beggs came in second in the 10,000-meter race while first year Sparkle Lee came in second in the long jump and sophomore Caitlin Butterbaugh came in second in the discus.
The women's team scored 143 points and fell just 24 points shy of the first-place finisher.
The Red Hawks hope that their success at the Sherman Lukoski Invite will translate to success throughout the outdoor season. The Red Hawks continue their season this Saturday at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational in Oshkosh. Events are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
